Vitamin D
Avington and Mommy enjoying the sun on our deck
The sun has shifted and we are all making vitamin D from its wonderful glow again. As the sun climbs higher in the sky each day, as he lingers longer and longer how are you getting out and about being sure to take healthy advantage of this Divine light?
Do you have an outdoor space set aside? Do your children have time to play in the sunshine everyday?
Here are some tips for getting out more:
1. Eat as many meals outside as possible. You don’t have to have fancy lawn chairs or tables either, a picnic blanket will do just fine. The kids will have so much fun and it really cuts down on your clean up (no table to wipe down, no placemats to clean).
2. Read books to your children or yourself outside.
3. Take your laptop outside when you work.
4. Make a commitment to go camping once a week or once a month at a nearby campground, river, lake, etc.
5. You would be amazed at how much outdoor fun kids can have with the simplest things. Hang a rope from a tree and tie a few knots in the end. Nail a few boards to the base of a tree for easier climbing, set up a tent or build a simple stick-and-sheet tipi.
Here are some tips for staying safe:
1. Be aware of your body. You want to soak up D but you don’t want to burn. Cover burn prone spots like your shoulders and face with a sun hat.
2. If you choose to use sunscreen really research what you’re using, be sure it is PABA and fragrance free
3. If you choose to use sunscreen don’t put it on right away. Sit in the sun for 15 minutes to one hour depending on the pigment of your skin, then put on your sun screen.
4. Be aware of the space you’re in. Check for garbage, especially sharp metal, and be aware of neighborhood dogs roaming about, especially if you have little ones.
Enjoy the earth in its full glory this spring and summer. Walk upon Her lightly and with grace and may the sweet breath of summer speak to your soul.
