Headlines - Sunday

I think Digby is onto something. But there's also another reason conservatives whine. It's called projection. Far too often, if you listen very closely to a Republican complaining about a Democrat, you'll note that the Democrat didn't do the thing they're being accused of, and the conservative already has. It's like a self-confessional, only a lot more bitter. After all, it's really hard being out of power for only 13 months of the past nine years.

Deep thought

Even if we can't use the word "retarded" anymore, at least we're still allowed to torture and execute mentally disabled people.

President Barack Obama was elected because we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country.

Tancredo misses the Jim Crow era. I'm told he got a standing ovation from the Teabaggers for this.

Tancredo Would Love to Repeal the Voting Rights Act

Some of you older folks out there may well remember first hand what African Americans had to go through in order to vote. White southerners who controlled the elections felt the need to impose solely on black voters literacy, civic and history tests that even white, college-educated people would've had difficulty passing.

When African American voters peacefully protested against this blatantly racist injustice, we attacked them with police dogs, beat them, turned fire hoses and water cannons on them, in your lifetime if you're 45 or older.
....
So Eli at FDL thought it would be a good idea to draw up his own litmus test that perhaps we could impose on the voting public (especially evangelicals and other Republicans):

The party of fiscal responsibility strikes again - Sen. Richard Shelby has put a hold on all of Prez Obama's nominations until he gets over $40 billion in pork barrel projects for his state.

In the real world, this is called "extortion"

John Cole points out that Shelby has a long track record of defending and promoting the interests of foreign corporations at the expense of American workers. Shelby's little stunt is to ensure that $100 billion in taxpayers' money is paid out to foreign corporations, which no doubt are lavishly rewarding Shelby's campaign fund.

Fighting for the right to hate

You see, giving Civil Rights to the queers by rolling out hate crimes statutes is a stealth project to deny Xristian Xrazies their right to hate queers.

A Christian group in Michigan has filed a lawsuit alleging that a package of hate crimes laws named after murder victim Matthew Shepard is an affront to their religious freedom.

Far from the intended purpose of severely punishing criminals who commit unspeakable acts against a persecuted minority group, the religious activists claim the laws are a guarded effort to "eradicate" their beliefs.

The sole purpose of this law is to criminalize the Bible and use the threat of federal prosecutions and long jail sentences to silence Christians from expressing their Biblically-based religious belief that homosexual conduct is a sin.

"Some good patriotic American names are Track, Bristol, Piper, Willow, Trigg and Tripp." – some wag on the intarweb.

BECK: "He chose to use his name, Barack, for a reason. To identify, not with America -- you don't take the name Barack to identify with America. You take the name Barack to identify with what? Your heritage? The heritage, maybe, of your father in Kenya, who is a radical? Really?"
Humph. A better question would be "why hasn't Glenn Beck denied raping and murdering a young girl in 1990?"

Dude, please. There are so many things wrong with that I don't know where to start. He didn't "take the name." It was given to him at birth. And if he had called himself 'Barry', you and your pathetic viewers would be screaming that his name is really 'Barack Hussein' and he's trying to hide his identity as a Kenyan Muslim radical infidel.

For the love of crap, you sound like a snotty little nine-year-old. Snap out of it.

Todd Palin invokes the Cheney defense

Ah, the family that grifts together. . .

Nearly 3,000 pages of e-mails that Todd Palin exchanged with state officials, which were released to msnbc.com and NBC News by the state of Alaska under its public records law, draw a picture of a Palin administration where the governor's husband got involved in a judicial appointment, monitored contract negotiations with public employee unions, received background checks on a corporate CEO, added his approval or disapproval to state board appointments and passed financial information marked "confidential" from his oil company employer to a state attorney.

Wait for it:

While 1,200 separate e-mails were released this week, 243 others were withheld by the state under a claim that executive privilege extends to Todd Palin as an unpaid adviser to the government.

Who knew David Addington was advising the Palins?

Al Franken beats David Axelrod with an ashtray

Al FrankenIf you watched Jon Stewart's The Daily Show take on blogospheric sensationalism last night, you might find yourself taking a Politico headline with a grain of salt. After all, Stewart showed headlines that -- if taken literally -- would make himself and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow violent hotheads at best and serial killers at worst. Making a slam dunk sort of logical argument becomes "destroying" or "eviscerating" or "bitch slapping," when the arguments in question are just calm reasoning.

So, after seeing more solid reasoning on the unreasonable nature of blog headlines, you might be a little leery of "Al Franken lays into David Axelrod over health care bill."

Just three weeks ago, the United States Supreme Court ended a ban on corporate spending in political elections, drawing intense criticism for the ruling's potential to erode the democratic process.

This week, a group that includes some of the wealthiest Republican CEOs on Wall Street have formed a group to take advantage of new fundraising possibilities for the GOP:
