We are profoundly gifted in the fact that we live only 45 minutes from the Hopland Solar Living Institute. We got out that way just a few weeks ago on an unusually warm day.
In addition to providing the community with classes on solar living, off grid living, eco carpentry and more the institute's grounds are a heaven for children and parents a like. They feature a solar powered merri-go-round, a large water fountain you can stand in the middle of which also doubles as a sun dial. They have crawling tunnels, a sand box and around back they have a lovely park with a duck pond - complete with duck and fish food for a feeding frenzy - only a quarter.
They have stationary bikes to show the boys how they can petal to create energy which lights up a light bulb. And let's not forget the Real Goods store with a haven of eco-friendly products for those who wish to buy organic clothing, sheets, non electric appliances or even a composting toilet. Nykki and Ronana's favorite thing though would have to be there awesome selection of carbonated juices for sale.
Educational experiences abound at the Solar Living Institute and what's more is that it's fun and free (they ask for a dollar donation per car). Every community has some sort of gem which can be used in your classroom of the world. Have you discovered yours yet? Tell us about it :)
